Thanks for the mention, and for alerting to me some newsletters that I wasn't aware of. Also, how perceptive of you to recognize that it's the community I write about, not so much the building.
Thank you Lisa! You've been such a supporter of The Ambient City. I really appreciate it. Looking forward to checking out your other recommendations, and delving into a bit more of your work.
I am very interested to check these out! I truly appreciate this because most of what I am led to is political pages which I mean there is plenty of that off of here lol! And thank you so much for the shout out. I will subscribe to the others as well!
Great list of recommendations Lisa. A sot of whiskey - Powers or Paddy preferably - is added to dishes in Irish kitchen a lot. From whiskey and mushroom sauce with steak to fruit loafs for dessert 🍪 delicious 😋
I meant in my Irish kitchen 😆 As long as your turkey doesn't catch fire from whiskey saturation 😉 I am assuming you are putting the stuffing into the bird 🦃 Happy Thanksgiving
I don't believe in stuffing the turkey (for the stuffing to cook through your bird is overdone!) so I guess it's dressing and safe to spike although bird might be disappointed. Will try it!
You had me at the cat eyes—which of course was the intention! But what you wouldn’t know is my Domino just passed and when she got excited and pouncy her eyes looked very much the same. She was a beautiful Tuxedo and we miss her dearly. It took me by surprise to see those eyes on my feed, shared by @mariacastrojimenez, who I do already love reading so very much. When you followed with Jorgen I knew I was in good company—2 for 2! So the next three naturally became instant follows and most likely soon subscribes. I lived in England for two years—it will be lovely to revisit London through substack eyes again. As a fellow New Yorker for most of my life, I always made sure to look up, to see the hidden gems, to find the small corners known only by insiders… I don’t know how many of those are left nowadays but I hope living in NYC is still the thrill for new generations it was for us.
I look forward to learning more about your work, as ancestry is becoming a new focal point of my own work on memoirs, my own and assisting with 2 others. At a time everything goes by in a flash, it’s more relevant than ever to delve into what our own slow living and family evolutions really mean to us for survival, for getting through what is to come.
I have settled with it, though it pangs me daily. This is what love is, after all—how much we can love is reciprocated in life by how much we can hurt. That’s how we know it is real.
Your image gave me the gift of Domino for a moment 🎁 Have a wonderful day, Lisa! Lovely to meet you here 💫
Lisa, Interesting substack list. I'll check them out. As far as whiskey, the only pumpkin pie I've made or eaten until I was much older is my grandma's which contains whiskey. It's much lighter than ones I've had at restaurants. Here's my post about it:https://lyndaheines.substack.com/p/grandmas-pumpkin-pie
Lisa, The one that surprised me and I'll make it again but cut back on the sugar is the fruit cocktail cake! Let me know what you think about the pumpkin pie. I think you'll like it.
The master baker at my kids' former school always jazzed up his honey cake with some bourbon, so that's definitely a thing. And I added 2 tbsp bourbon to my pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving this year and boy was that a game changer!

I just love the kitty picture. She looks just like my cat.
Tuxies are the best!

That photo of Kneidel (love the name) is so beguiling. Thank you for these recommendations, almost all are right up my street.
Thanks for the love Lisa! I always like seeing your comments about the recipes and the streets of Montreal!
These are all new to me. Thanks for sharing. I will check them out!
