A fascinating story well told. Montreal's (and Canada's) history is fascinating when you get down to the granular level.

Indeed. There was a trend in the 1980s among academic historians to write “microhistory “ (The best example of this was Carlo Ginsburg’s “The Cheese and the Worms” which is a great read. I highly recommend). Family history is a perfect example of micro history. It can illuminate the past by revealing the actual lived experiences of historical moments.

Fascinating and thanks for introducing me to a chapter of history of which I knew absolutely nothing! Great research and writing, what an important read as the world around us returns to nativism and all that comes with it.
